Emil Lyseng (1892-1963) was ten years old when he came to Alberta from Minnesota with his father
and brothers and sisters in 1902. In addition to learning various trades required for a farmer, Emil
learned to bake bread, wash and mend clothes, and was a great help to his sister Mary, who was left
in charge of household duties after their mother, Ragnild, passed away.

Emil married Martha Ditmanson (1896-1969) in 1915. They lived on his father's farm, and his father
and Alfred continued to live with them. Neighbours liked to gather at the home of Emil and Martha
to enjoy sing-songs with Emil playing the violin and his daughter Elsie at the organ. Martha never
complained about sharing her home.

Emil was the chairman of the Lyseng School Board for several years before it closed in 1944.
Six children were born to Emil and Martha: Elsie, Richard, Luella, Arthur, Mildred and Wilbert.
