Thordenskjold School History

Prior to 1894, there were only a handful of settlers and squatters in the Armena district,
but with the coming of the Grues, Movalds, Moes and others - it became necessary to
consider the education of the children. Early in 1896 a school committee consisting of
Thore Grue, Ole Lofsvold and Evan N. Froen petetioned the Council of Public Instruction
of the North West Territories at Regina, to create the Thordenskjold School District. The
school district was given the weighty name of a great Norwegian sailor, Peter Thordenskjold.
The school was built in the summer of 1898. In 1948, the Thordenskjold school disctrict became
part of the Armena school district and ceased operations.
