Elias homesteaded - taking up a "tree claim" on which he had to plant and care for many trees.
Those trees are still living today. When his father Knut E. Lyseng, and his three sons (Erick, Albert and Knut K.) decided to move to Canada, a quarter section of land was also taken up in his name. However, Elias' wife, Rasmine, refused to go up to Canada because she had endured two experiences homesteading - one with her parents and one with Elias. Elias and Rasmine had six children: Julia, Christine, Marie, Bernt (Bennie), Melvin and Emma. Elias and Rasmine are buried at Saint Pauli Lutheran Memorial Cemetery.
