Mary Pederson Lyseng

Mary was born in Clinton, Minnesota on August 19, 1882. Her future husband, Olaf Pederson was born
on December 25, 1875.
Olaf, came with the Albert Lyseng family up to Canada in 1902 and married Mary
in 1903.
Before leaving for Canada, Olaf had
purchased a quarter section of land and later bought the west half of
another quarter section which had a large hill, which is called
Pretty Hill - named after a Cree Chief "Pretty"
who died in battle on this hill. Olaf first built a shack on this homestead. In 1904,
In 1904 a house was built and three boys were born: Alvin in 1906, Orvil in 1908, and Henry who
only lived
for a month. They also fostered two girls, Stella, who was a six year-old daughter of a widowed man named
W.S. Holland,
and Margaret Hughes, who they took in at the age of 13 months from a children's shelter in
Edmonton. Olaf Pederson died in 1921
in the General Hospital in Edmonton after a lingering illness.
