Martin Lyseng was born on November 9, 1900 in Clinton, Minnesota. He passed away on May 19, 1980.
Dagny Lofgren Lyseng was born on July 31, 1906 in Vilhelmina, Sweden and passed away on January 6, 1997.
They were married on January 20, 1928.
Martin and Ernest Lyseng were joint owners of the Erick Lyseng home place. In 1927, Ernest decided he
had enough of fighing weeds and
sold his share to Martin - moving to Grimshaw to go into the hardware
business.
In the spring of 1929, Martin sold his farm to Arthur and
Bill Skaret and went to join Ernest in Grimshaw.
This happened just as the depression hit and Martin went back to the farm buying it back
from Arthur and
Bill.
Upon returning, Martin along with his cousin Edward Hong erected a saw mill. In the spring of 1930, they
were busy
sawing lumber from poplar logs. Martin and Dagny were married ten years before they had a
good crop because of the dust storms, hail
and drought. Dagny churnned and printed butter and was lucky
to get seven cent a pound for the butter. A five gallon can of special cream
brought about $1.49.
They also fed and sheltered many men who rode freight trains looking for work on their way to the coal mines
in Dinant.
Dagny and Martin had five children: Evereld, Barbara, Diane, Marilyn and Malcolm. Marilyn passed away
in
July 5, 1948 at the age of nine
from an enlarged heart. Barbara passed away November 14, 1968. Evereld
passed away December 15, 2003. Diane passed away August 1, 2017.
